Profile

Mr Bas Ranganathan FRCS (ORL-HNS), MCh

I am a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon based at Manchester Royal Infirmary. I treat a wide range of ENT conditions both in adults and children. I have a specialist interest in managing nasal and sinus conditions including functional & cosmetic rhinoplasty, and nasal reconstruction following removal of skin cancer and trauma.

After completing my higher surgical training in otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), I undertook further subspecialist training in rhinology (nose and sinuses) and facial plastic surgery at Manchester Royal Infirmary, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London  and Lisbon. I had the opportunity to learn the art of rhinoplasty surgery from some of the best facial plastic surgeons in the world. I believe in providing individualised care and I tailor the treatment plan according to the needs and preferences of the patients.

Rhinoplasty and Nasal Construction

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures.

Nose conditions

Management of nose problems such as nasal blockage, sinusitis, nasal polyps, smell disorders, facial pain and nose bleeds.

Throat conditions

Patients with throat and voice problems may require an endoscopy in order to make the correct diagnosis.

Ear conditions

Patients who have problems with wax blocking their ears can have the wax safely removed using the technique of microsuction.

A Personal Approach

Let me take this opportunity to outline my personal approach to nasal cosmetic surgery and how I aim to treat patients under my care.

In my view the fundamental aim of a rhinoplasty is to give my patients a natural looking nose with normal breathing; a nose which is in balance with other facial features. Every effort is made to achieve a ‘non-operated’ look by avoiding excessive surgery which could weaken the nasal structure and cause breathing problems or create an unnatural appearance.

With experience I have become increasingly aware that a key component of a successful rhinoplasty is that my patients have realistic expectations. I will tell each patient clearly what I think I can achieve and explain the risks of surgery including the rare possibility of a poor outcome which may require a second operation.

” I couldn’t be happier with the treatment and care I received…. Prior to the surgery, Dr Ranganathan was so patient in answering all my questions and explaining the procedure and made me feel very confident and reassured that he could achieve my desired outcomes while also managing my expectations well “

” Dr Ranganathan’s craftsmanship is clear and his skill is undoubtable….. “I’ve always been unhappy with the appearance of my nose, but after suffering an injury to the nose that affected my breathing, I finally took the decision to undergo a septo-rhinoplasty. I’d has several consultations with various surgeons, but never felt quite comfortable with anyone and therefore kept questioning whether I should opt for surgery or not. I met with Dr Ranganathan for my first consultation and immediately felt comfortable with him.”

SF

” I would not hesitate to recommend Mr Ranganathan – for his expertise in surgery, for his kind and understanding manner, and for his excellent explanation of treatment… My treatment by Mr Ranganathan has been excellent. He was very understanding and easy to talk to from the first consultation, and I felt he took care to ensure he fully understood my condition and the issues it was causing for me. He gave a full explanation of all the effects and possible complications of the surgery he recommended, and so I felt confident to make a decision about the surgery.”
